"Nazim repents and reverts to Islam" say Haveeru

Haveeru has just reported that Mohamed Nazim repented and reverted to Islam in front of the media in a ceremony at the Islamic Centre.

It is not known at this stage whether Nazim was subjected to any coercion or if it was his wish and not the government's decision to turn this extremely private act into a media event.

The fundamental issue of human rights violation by the state remains and Maldives Dissent calls for a full, external, and independent inquiry not only into the chain of events but also why the human rights commission remained silent.

Meanwhile religious hardline contributers to the blog  Addu Community have launched a witch-hunt by cut-pasting comments from Facebook profiles that it says are anti-Islam.

Back to 100%. Everyone's happy. The nation can sleep now.

I still wonder though how these people who called for his beaheading are going to release all that rage. They surely cannot just swallow it. There has to be another outlet.

What do you do now with no one left to behead?

While I find the lack of freedom of Religion in the Maldives abhorrent...

I also find the actions of Mr. Nazim very provocative too...because it was totally inappropriate for him to anounce his leaving islam in a gathering that was designed to promote islam...

I totally disagree with the government stance on promoting or funding any religion...but unfortunately that was the case when Dr. Naik was invited to lecture on the government money...so many people went there to listen to that and so to be subjected the kind of humiliation they were by Mr. Nazim is in appropriate as well....

Also I find the actions of the so called human rights defenders (including HRCM...whcih is questionable), amnesty, humanrights watch, maldives detainee network, maldivians against toture etc... very discomforting...as they did not come to this mans defence when they should have...not because they like him...because they are human rights defenders...and whether Maldivians like it or not freedom of religion is a human right !!

Maldives is a signatory for the two treaties that came out of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and as such is obliged to play by the rules...and with the election of Maldives to the Human Rghts COuncil....I sincerly hope the human rights abuses and lack of basic freedoms such as freedom of religion will become highly visible to outside world...especially Europe where most of the tourists come from...this should have some effect on that.....

By the way before people start claiming freedom of religion is an invention of west....read little bi o islamic history....phrophet tolerated non-muslims during his time...in quran there is compulsion for any one to be a muslim...and is your own faith in Allah/Muhammed that weak that the moment there is freedom of religion you will convert to Bhuddism and start drinking in a strip club !!!! just some food for thought !!

I cant wait for the day when ALL MALIVIANS especially the government offcials are slapped with a some sort of very punitive VISA to enter any country that has freedom of religion...ie primarily west and few others such as turkey, indonesia...so MAlDIVIANS as a whole will start to realize that human rights is no joke...including freedom of religion...

What other choice did he have? No one was defending him, except a few pseudo-anonymous bloggers. When one is locked up and sees no other way to get out one will say whatever is required to get out. And why should he suffer imprisonment/death on behalf of freedom of/from religion when most Maldivians resolutely don't want that freedom?

However I hope those who give foreign aid to Maldives put pressure on the government regarding this issue.

On the one hand "repent" and become a Muslim, on the other hand be imprisoned, possibly be stripped of citizenship, be subjected to harassment and violence and be forced to leave your family and friends country.

Gee I wonder what I would choose!

this is an example of psychlogical torture, and under torture a person would admit to anything he/she is subjected to. I also wonder where were the great voices of Human Rights organisations in this case,,,,,

@ Adam
You really need to read the holy quran with translations seriously.
And also start trying to pray 5 times a day.

Did not the quran mention that any non-muslim WILL go to hell?
Does anyone want to go to a place with eternal suffering? I doubt it. Now imagine one of your friends are being bullied by some others. Would not you want to save him before it's too late? Likewise, the govt. also wants to save Nazim here from hell.

If you can't understand me, you must be either non-muslim or plain stupid. (YES I know I am 6 months late but this is really.. really.. what's that word?, UNNERVING)
